Interview with BMT Micro Award winner, Mehmet Akkaya

Q: Hi Mehmet, could you introduce yourself?
A: I am Mehmet Akkaya and I am a job preparation technician for OMCO.

Q: What were your thoughts on receiving the BMT Award?
A: Winning the award two years ago felt incredibly honorable. After dedicating 30 years to OMCO, this recognition meant a lot to me.

Q: Was winning the award a surprise?
A: Not really. My contributions resonate across the entire OMCO Group. I’m proud of the impact I’ve made—reducing welding costs from €3000 (outsourcing) to just €300 (in-house).

Q: You were particularly awarded for your invention, can you tell us more about it?
A: The invention is a crucial machine part for HVOF welding. Previously, it needed replacement every 4 months. It connects welding powder, gas, and chambers. Additionally, I oversee cutting operations and other machine components, having designed the initial layout.

Q: How long has the invention been in use?
A: We’ve been using the invention for 2 years now after some trial and refinement.

Q: What are the biggest challenges you face at OMCO?
A: Limited resources often force us to reschedule manufacturing plans—a constant juggling act.

Q: How would you describe working for OMCO?
A: It’s never monotonous. Despite consistent products, each day brings unique problems. Dimensions switch between centimeters and inches, keeping things interesting. I thrive on the variation and challenges.

Q: What advice would you give someone starting at OMCO?
A: Love the job, seek solutions, collaborate, and be a team player. Adaptability and kindness matter.

Q: If I could do it all over again, would you still choose to work for OMCO?
A: Absolutely. Liking my job has been the key to my success. Starting as an operator, I gradually climbed the ladder, seizing numerous opportunities within the company.

Q: Where do you keep your trophy?
A: My well-deserved trophy proudly sits on my desk.
